  1. I own the SD870...

Amazingly good point and shoot camera. Very clear even if you have shaky hands. Also it is quick and responsive.

It has a decent set of features too... The long exposure settings (15 seconds!) are awesome for taking snowy moonlit landscapes at night...

I would like the ability to manually focus, but you can't have everything.

It does have some quality issues though. I'm on my 2nd replacement. (lens error and broken lcd) I have been able to get it replaced with no problems so far, so I don't mind.

I liked its predecessor better though... the SD850 was AMAZING... But with even bigger quality issues than the SD870...

I personally would buy the G9 (lots of features)... But from the sounds of it, you would be more happy with the SD870 (better for taking candid pictures of your 2 year old)

  2. G9 is better, it has :

    - high resolution 12.1mp.

    - creative shutting modes, p, tv,av, M, etc.

    - a hot shoe for big flash.

    - high quality pics.

    - Very clear pics.

    - also better price, ha ha.

I have one and i love it.

These pics i took by my G9.

They are not really good but clear.

    I never stop learning skill.

  3. SD870 IS is your basic point & shoot. But it has Image Stabilizer which will help with movement. It also has a cool light effect that turns lights into various shapes (hearts, stars, etc.).

G9 will do everything the 870 does except for the light effects but it does have more options if you're into shooting manual. But if you're not willing to learn how to use it or play with the settings, it's not really worth it.

G9 is probably the best but because of the manual settings and it has the most megapixels but it's also probably the most expensive. You'll be happy with either or any Canon but it really depends on what you want to do with it and how much you want to spend.

To compare specs. between each camera, go to Canon's website and click the buttons under each of the 3 cameras and then click "compare now" at the top.
