1. Sound to me that you are in the water a bit over your head.

Anyway, at the back of the camera, you will see a large LCD screen with a row of buttons on both sides.

Look for a button with the "clock & multiple frame stack on top each other".

This is the button for timer/single shot/multiple shot. Press it until LCD show a single frame icon.

I do strongly suggest you read the owner manual, there are a lot of very basic and fundamental info there to tell you how to operate the camera and what those buttons are for.

Like Fhotoace suggest, some formal education will definitely help you to master the beast.

  2. The focus conformation dot is in the center, unlike the Nikons which is at the extreme lower left of the screen (since the advent of the electronic rangefinder found on the Nikon F4's forward) and just like the Nikon's, you can get the camera to beep when it finds focus.

So you are saying that when you press the shutter release button, it shoots a number of images in a row?

If you don't have a 35 mm SLR and this is your first experience using a fully adjustable camera, you may find taking a class is your best bet ... this question is only one of hundreds if this is your first rodeo.

Since the controls on Canon EOS cameras are very similar, 35 mm or digital SLR's switching from one to the other is not a problem.

Nikon's have a dial where the rewind k**b would have been if it were an old 35 mm camera. The dial allows the photographer to choose single shot, continuous low speed shots, continuous high speed shots, live view, self-timer and Mirror Up mode.

Not having a Canon in front of me precludes me from telling you how to set your camera for single shots.
