I was looking at this camera http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/features.jsp?model_id=MDL101642 and its JVC, but it looks really good and has alot of good features, but i want to look and compare more. I want to get a camcorder like they have in like colleges and stuff, and if im going to spend up to about 5 grand or more i want to make sure im getting my moneys worth and have NO regrets. So which would be the best, have the longest battery, and longer warranty? feel free to add in any other brands. thanks!

  1. No camcorder comes with a good battery in the box. You need to buy optional rechargeable batteries.

With your budget, I would suggest:

Canon XHA1 (hidef & standard def)

    Canon XL2 (standard def only)

    Sony HDR-FX1, HVR-Z1U (hidef & standard def)

    Sony HDR-FX7, HVR-V1U (hidef & standard def)

    Panasonic DVX100B (standard def only)

In addition to the camcorder, you will need to investigate microphones (shotgun, wireless lav, stereo - Sennheiser, Shure, Audio Technica), a small lighting kit (Bescor, NRG Research), extra rechargeable batteries, a decent fluid head tripod, a good sturdy case (Pelican or SKB), Lenses (wide angle and tele - maybe fish-eye), boom pole, zepellin (also known as a "dead cat"), mic universal shock-mount... If the camcroder has only a 1/8inch jack for mics, you will want to get an XLR adapter (BeachTek, juicedLink) for pro-grade mics... and you'll probably need to upgrade your computer - fast processor(s)... and a couple of 500 gig external hard drives... and your computer needs firewire 400 (IEEE1394a) ports.

Keep in mind that there is always something "new and improved" coming out. Especially with regards to electronics. You don't have to keep a camcorder forever. Maybe up to about 3-4 years... You will replace whichever camcorder you get.

Personally, I would suggest starting a little smaller - like a Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7 or HC9 and move up to the pro grade stuff over time. In the mean time, you can start your mic and lighting collection...
