Cant delete smses from Dopod 577W

i've been smsing for quite a long time and i'd never bothered deleting them until recently when i got warnings saying that my phone memory's running low. upon trying to delete my sms, i deleted it and clear my deleted items folder.. but after i switched off and switched on my hp again.. the smses that i had deleted+cleared from the deleted items folder are stil in the inbox. can anyone help me with this?
