  1. We need more detail.

How do you have the HDMI cable plugged in, and where is the sound originating? What do you mean by "surround theater kid" ... is that a receiver/amp and speakers?

Normally, you would connect the audio out from the TV to the HT and that would send the sound to the speakers. Or, you would feed a cable or satellite box to the HT (which would process the audio) and the output of the HT to the input of the TV (for video only).

I don't know how YOU have things connected, but one of the above approaches should work. Note you have to be aware of what is an input and what is an output. Also you may have to use a menu/setup on either the TV or the HT to make the actual input/output jack "live".

  2. First off, you have to make sure your surround receiver is not merely "HDMI pass thru" but true HDMI. There are many recievers that only have pass thru and if you have one then you have to use another wire format for transmitting sound.

Second, make sure the HDMI cable is plugged into an "HDMI out" port on the TV and into an "HDMI in" port on the surround receiver.

Third, make sure your receiver is set to play the signal from the "HDMI in" port you are using (many will have more than one "HDMI in" ports and you have to specify which one to play from).

    This SHOULD solve your problem.
