Can't get phone to exit voice mail

Question

when I check my voice mail & then earase my messages it says to hit star to exit. but nothing seems to happpen or it will freeze up. this only happens when there was a voice message & I go to earase it. if there os no voice mail & I check it I can exit no problem! It's very frustrating
