Can't open a word document

Question

Hi,
Thanks for your prompt response. I've had my computer 4 years so guess the 60 days trial run for the windows 2003 is obsolete. What do I do now? My computer system is a Compaq Presario (SR1103WM), the Product # is
PC182A-ABA, Serial # is CNC4250LLB (all this info was on the CPU tower)
Since everything seems to be obsolete could this be why I have a software and application problem with opening a word document? How can I fix this problem?
