Can't separate blade unit from jar, but managed to...

Question

We tried to separate the plastic assembly that holds the blades from the jar (to clean the blades) but it doesn't seem to s***w off or bayonet-turn off like any other blender we've had. Now it leaks badly there, but still won't seem to budge
