Canterbury in control against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Northern-Districts-c825 in Plunket Shield
Canterbury were in a very strong position in their Plunket Shield match against Northern Districts, at the Mainpower Oval, Rangiora in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 on Tuesday. At stumps on day-two, Canterbury were 130 for the loss of three wickets. They now trail the visitors
first innings total of 149 by just 19 runs.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-Fulton-c2177 won the toss for the home team and elected to field first. There was some moisture beneath the surface of the wicket, and the Northern Districts batsmen found it difficult to cope with the treacherous conditions.
Openers Bradley Watling and captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Brad-Wilson-c1187 failed to give their team a solid start. The first wicket to fall in the innings was that of Watling, who managed only seven runs before taking the long walk back to the pavilion.
First-drop http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Daniel-Flynn-c1309 wasn’t able to make an impression, as he was sent back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers. He was followed by the Northern Districts captain, who scored eight runs in his short stay at the crease. The visitors were in deep
trouble with three of their top-order batsmen back in the pavilion for just 24 runs.
However, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hamish-Marshall-c1525 and Brook Hatwell constructed a solid 56-run partnership for the fourth wicket, guiding their team’s total to 80. Marshall failed to capitalise on the start he got to his innings, as he was dismissed for 36 runs.
Wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-McGlashan-c2178 failed to get going, as he was dismissed after adding just five runs to the total. He was followed by Hatwell, who managed to score 22 runs in his innings. Northern Districts were in danger of being bowled out within
100 runs at that stage, as they were 86 for six.
However, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graeme-Aldridge-c1502 and Trent Boult put together 43 runs for the seventh wicket. They got out after scoring 23 and 24 runs respectively, guiding their team closer to the 150-run mark in their first innings.
Matthew Henry was the pick of the bowlers for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Ellis-c1037 also bowled well for his three wickets in the innings.
The hosts didn’t get off to an ideal start to their innings, as they lost opener Rob Nicol in the very first over. The seasoned campaigner wasn’t able to trouble the scorers. Captain Fulton then joined http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Papps-c1961 at the crease and the pair put together
60 runs for the second wicket. Papps was dismissed after scoring 35 runs with the help of five fours.
This brought Doug Brownlie to the middle, who tried to play aggressively. He scored 22 runs off just 26 balls with the help of three fours, but gave his wicket away at the wrong time.
At the close of play, Fulton was unbeaten on 60. He batted sensibly and didn’t take too many risks and will be looking forward to scoring a big one for his team. Shanan Stewart was the other not-out batsman on four, as the pair ended day-two on 130.
Graeme Aldridge, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Trent-Boult-c2708 and Brent Arnel took one wicket each in the innings for the visitors.
