Canterbury look to bowl out Northern Districts on final day: Plunket Shield
Northern Districts took a 94-run second innings lead with five wickets remaining against Canterbury in their Plunket Shield match, at the Mainpower Oval in Rangiora, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 on Wednesday. At the close of the third day’s play, the visitors reached 223
runs for the loss of five wickets.
Earlier, Canterbury had put the visitors in to bat after winning the toss. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Northern-Districts-c825 were bowled out for 149 runs in their first innings, as none of their batsmen was able to score a half-century. Hamish Marshall top scored in the innings with 36
runs, but no one else was able to score more than 30.
Matthew Henry bowled extremely well, taking five wickets in the first innings. He got good support from Andrew Ellis, who picked up three wickets.
In reply, the home team batted sensibly, taking a healthy first innings lead of 129 runs. Opener Rob Nicol wasn’t able to get going, as he was dismissed for a duck. However, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-Fulton-c2177, scoring 60 runs for
the second wicket. Papps got out after scoring 35 runs with the help of five fours in his innings. The seasoned opener would have liked to carry onto the start and make a big score, but he failed to do so.
Doug Brownlie and Shanan http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canterbury-c775 captain scored a steady knock of 62 runs off 147 balls with the help of six fours. However, he failed to score a century
for his team.
Wicketkeeper batsman Tom Latham and Andrew Ellis got out after scoring eight and 11 runs respectively and the hosts were struggling at 163 for the loss of seven wickets. However, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ryan-McCone-c87321 put together 66 runs for the eighth wicket and guided
their team to a strong position. McCone scored 25 whereas Astle managed a brilliant 51 runs. A quick fire 37 off 33 balls from Matthew Henry, guided the team to 278 in their first innings.
Brent Arnel was the pick of the bowlers for his team, as the tall medium pacer took four wickets.
Northern Districts captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Daniel-Flynn-c1309, who
managed only five runs.
Seasoned campaigner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hamish-Marshall-c1525 batted sensibly alongside Watling and the pair guided their team’s total to 124 with a superb 71-run partnership for the third wicket. Marshall got out after adding 46 runs to the total whereas the Northern Districts opener
was run-out for 60.
Wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-McGlashan-c2178 also got out for 25, but Brook Hatwell and Graeme Aldgridge ended the day safely. They were unbeaten on 38 and 14 respectively, guiding their team to 223 for five.
