I am confident cantering on every one elses horse, but not on my own. It is mostly because she goes fast and takes quick little strides. I walk trot canter gallop and jump on everyone elses horses, but when i am on mine, the only thing out of those 5 that i cannot seem to do is canter... Any help on feeling better about it? I have cantered her before, she is very smooth and her canter is very enjoyable, but somehow i just cant get into it...

  1. If you are uncomfortable with her speed, and feel like she is going to take off on you, do a half-halt, or just simply pull until she slows. I have a similar situation with a young Arab, who throws a fit by speeding up. If you figure out her speed, you may feel more comfortable at the canter.

  2. what do you mean? are you nurvous or cant you get her into it?

If you are nurvous because its bumpy, try being 5ft 6 and galloping a shetland! thats bumpy!

You will just have to keep going for it and getting used to it, before long, you will feel that every other horse is really slow and too smoothe.

Its just a matter of getting accoustomed to it.

Good luck. (galloping is the real fun ;)

  3. If she's doing something bad that's making you uncomfortable than seek the help of a trainer to fix it. If it's just a matter of her going too fast the try to do as many check releases as possible(meaning check or pull her back and then release the check. repeat). Ask someone to work her on a lunge while you ride so that you can become accostumed to and comfortable with her canter and strides.

    GOOD LUCK

  4. Have someone put her on a lunge line while you ride her that way you will have the feeling of security because someone is holding onto her. Eventually let the lunge line get longer and longer over time and then take it off and you will more than likely have the confidence that you need to ride her without the lunge line. Once you start on your own do a slower canter and then get faster over time so you ha ve more confidence with going fast. Good luck!

  5. Hmm, some of my students had the same problem. It's actually quite normal. Start by working her in an enclosed area (roundpen is best). If you can have somebody put her on a line while you ride her. To get more confidence you are just going to have to ride her canter more and more. If she has no bad behaviors then your confidence should build rapidly. Then start using groundpoles while you canter her. And once your confidence is really great go into the arena and work her. It can take some time but cantering is great fun for rider and horse (:

  6. what kind of bit are you using? . In any case try relaxing , if she goes to fast do a circle to calm her down . if this doesn't work try cantering her on a lunge rope in a circle before you ride her , How old is she ? If none of these work try getting a more experienced rider to canter her . Hope this helps :D gd luck anyway .

  7. Try lengthening her stride. Sometimes it makes a difference.

My horse sometimes gets too up and down when he canters, my trainer has me legthen his stide, it doesn't make him faster though. If you don't know how to lengthen, ask your trainer. It also helps with jumping if you can shorten and lengthen if you aren't going to get a good spot so it's also helpful to know.

  8. Try to put your hands down and keep them about where the band on a martingale would go. Try to force yourself not to pull back and hang on her mouth. That could cause her to go faster. Make sure your legs aren't gripping her sides too much. Some of the horses at the stables i board at get faster and faster when people do that. Keep your heels down and canter every time you ride her so you can get used to it. Maybe get someone to lunge you.

    Good luck
