Do I have to register a 16 ft canoe in N.C. , if I'm just using paddles?

  1. Not normally unless it has some type of motor, either gas or electric. Here in NY some of the state parks require you to get a permit to access the lake in park with a canoe or kayak, but it is not an actual boat registration.


  2. It is different in every state - any answer that doesn't specificaly list your state is a guess.

    In North Carolina the law is that you only need to register boats with motors and sailboats over 14 feet.  Since you are not planning on using a motor or sail, you don't need to register it.

    If you were in another state the laws are likely to be somewhat different.  In Minnesota, all canoes and kayaks need to be registered.

  3. Only vessels using mechanical propulsion need to be registered. If you use an electric motor you do need to register it.
