Question:

Cap off a steel or aluminum gas pipe?

I've read a question/answer about capping off a pipe that was copper (or black) - but ours is a silver color. Does it make a difference in how we go about it? Or is there just a different kind of cap we should buy?

  1. It makes no difference as long as the threads are the same. They will either be a flare or national pipe threads. If it is about the size of your pinkie finger on the tip, and has a rounded end, it would be a flare most likely 3/8". If it has a hole that is big enough on the inside to slip your forefinger in the end (and may be tight) it is most likely 1/2 NPT.

Black iron pipe is mostly used for gas, however silver or galvanized pipe caps will work just as well.

Turn the gas off, if not already, use pipe joint compound or Teflon tape to seal the threads.

  2. In a perfect world the pipe would be black pipe that is made for gas only.Galvanized pipe is for water and not gas.The inside will flake off and cause problems with pilot lights. You should use a black pipe cap on gas line. That is code.

  3. to be safe I would use thesilver or alumium....bewst to check with Lowes or Home depot......

  4. If this is a flexible connector that a range or dryer was connected to, remove the flex connector and cap the metal pipe.  Flex connectors are usually aluminum and are silver.

  5. I am betting that the line is not aluminum. It is galvanized steel. You can use a black or galvanized steel cap.
