Real Mallorca’s run of eleven consecutive games without a win in the Primera Division have come to an end after their 2-1 win over Real Betis.
This was a team that was ready to make history. They started this season’s Primera Division in an impressive manner. They went unbeaten in their first five games as they managed to register three wins and two draws that made them sit on the third place in
the standings.
They were even dreaming bigger than that. “We can’t lose sight of the fact that our main aim is to stay up," midfielder Tomas Pina said. “But beyond that, there’s no reason why we can’t strive to achieve bigger things. We are an ambitious team.”
There were even talks that their coach, Joaquin Caparros, the man who was behind their revival and swift start to the season would get a long-term contract with the club. Something that is rare given the short life span managers in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011 have these days.
Unfortunately, things have not turned as expected. Mallorca succumbed to their first defeat of the season as they failed to outmuscle Getafe and out of the window went their hope of making history.
Since then it has been a downhill road for the Islanders as they could not master a single win in 11 consecutive games.
From a club that had its sights on a European football to slipping to the relegation zone in just 11 matches, all they can think about right now is how to survive and stay away from the drop zone.
Caparros is a man who is known for his technical discipline and direct style. Mostly he is a defensive-minded tactician who urges his players to be tight at the back. He was never known as a coach who plays beautiful and entertaining football. However, his
style of play and philosophy used to pay dividends and his team somehow used to manage to get positive results in their favour.
Now all of that is not working. Their strong back-line has been breached so many times and it is in shambles at the moment as they have conceded so many goals. In fact they have the second-worst defensive record in the Primera Division. Only Deportivo who
are in bottom of the table have a worse goal difference record than them.
Moreover, Mallorca have also problems at the other end. They are finding it difficult to score goals. In fact they have managed to score only three goals in their last six matches in all competitions.
Despite of all their struggles, Caparros is still adamant and saying that he is not going anywhere. He believes his side has not hit the bottom yet and soon they will turn things around.
“We have not hit the bottom, I believe in the players and I feel that they support me.”
“Will I resign? No, if I fall down seven times then I will get up an eighth time, and if I fall eight times then I will get up for a ninth time, I won’t stop.”
Now Caparros can breathe a sigh of relieve as their dismal run of poor results finally came to an end. They have managed to come away with all the three points after their 2-1 win over Real Betis.
The result takes them to 16th position in the table standing and one point above the relegation zone.
