Capcom is a brand that has been there for as long as one can remember, introducing franchises such as Mega Man and Street Fighter in the 80s for the console that was considered the hottest in the market Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
Times have changed and both the aforementioned franchise are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year.
One thing that has not changed, however, is the huge expectations that gamers have of Capcom because of the reputation that it has earned itself through its prolific titles.
While everything seemed to be going its way over a decade ago, things have gotten significantly rockier for the company in recent times. It seems to be struggling to understand the psyche of gamers and therefore failing to satisfy them with as much consistency
as it was accustomed to in the past.
One of the biggest issues that the publisher seems to be facing is how to lift its Resident Evil franchise and return it its long-lost glory.
The survival horror third-person shooter has been one of the biggest hit in the 90s, with Resident Evil 2 being the pinnacle of the series. Even today, the fans are found talking about the experience that was offered to them by the second title despite it
lacking way behind its successors in terms of graphics.
However, all the Resident Evil games that followed the PlayStation One release have struggled to impress the fans. They have either strayed too far away from the true spirit of the game, or have arrived with pre-loaded issues and glitches that have ruined
the experience.
Despite putting in a great deal of effort in the development of Resident Evil 6, the game failed to make the sort of impact that Capcom had hoped for.
Once again, fans of the franchise found themselves coming across a variety of issues, which included but were not limited to camera and too much unnecessary experimentation at the end of developers.
While the company has claimed that the shipment of the latest title in the series to retailers world-wide have broken previous records, it has acknowledged the fact that the gamers are not entirely happy with the product.
The gamers today are more demanding than ever and are not forgiving towards the slightest shortcoming in a game. Resident Evil 6 has become a victim to this aggressive and unforgiving attitude of the gamers.
Rather than giving up on the game, Capcom is continuing its efforts to make the game as appealing as possible despite a rocky post-launch period.
The company recently launched the game’s first major multiplayer downloadable content (DLC) for the Xbox 360, with the PlayStation 3 version expected to be announced any day.
The expansion pack has added three new modes, namely Predator, Survivor and Onslaught, all meant to be played with fellow human players.
Of course, the absence of the promised Siege mode does not go noticed, but Capcom had confirmed earlier this month that it is in the pipeline and will be coming out soon, though no definite period has been revealed yet.
While the new modes introduced to the game will surely contribute to the excitement that the game offers, it remains to be seen if DLC can save Resident Evil 6, or if the game is about to meet the same fate as the other Resident Evil games following the
second title in the series.
Capcom sure has a lot of work to do and judging by the direction in which the gaming industry is heading, the publisher does not have much time to pull itself together and start living up to the expectations of gamers.
