Capello "absolutely" wants a second chance to coach England's Three Lions
It will be two weeks before England informs current coach Fabio Capello if they intend to keep him on or sack him from the national team. Capello approached the England football association telling them he "absolutely" wanted to stay on as coach despite the teams elimination from the World Cup on Saturday in a match against Germany.
Capello still has two years on his contract, which began in December of 2007 with the Three Lions, but wanted to make it perfectly clear he will not resign despite England's most lopsided World Cup defeat,4-1, " I want to know he has total confidence in me" Capello said of chairman for the English Club Sir David Richards. Chances are looking good for Capello, who will help rebuild the English team for a stronger run at the World Cup in four years.
When asked if he was worth the money he was being paid to coach, Capello humbly stated "I think its not the money that is the value of a man". Capello is a former Real Madrid and AC Milan coach, but led England to nine wins from 10 qualifying matches. The team was very impressive at this stage, topping their group and only losing once, raising questions as to whether or not Capello had finally fashioned a World Cup winning team for England.
Once the team made it to South Africa their luck began to change. The opener upset match against America was a major setback mentally, as was drawing their first two games, layering on the pressure to succeed in an-edge-of-your seat finale 1-0 match over Slovenia.
Capello's decision making and overall guidance of the team was in question before the 4-1 loss to Germany in the knockout round, the heaviest loss the team has sustained on a World Cup stage, resulting in even more quarries of his player selection, their fitness, and his formation tactics.
He explained in a press conference that the reason England didn't advance further, and why he didn't get the best out of striker Wayne Rooney was because " I think all the English players are really tired at this competition. The coaches told me the physical condition of the players was not good and they did not play like the players that we know."
On the agenda for rebuilding a stronger England team: turning to younger players. The tiredness of this years squad is a disappointing reason to be eliminated, thus 'old timers' such as John Terry, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard could be saying goodbye to their spots on the national team if Capello is hired on again.
His decision to use a 4-4-2 formation was criticized as out of date, but Capello confirmed that changing the style doesn't necessarily change the outcome, that "a good style depends on the form of the players". But the players were criticized for not playing as tightly as they had in qualifying games. Germany's Miroslav Klose said "I did not believe the impression that England came out as a team. . . I expected them to come with the bit between their teeth, but after five or seven minutes it was clear to me that it wasn't the case."
Klose scored one goal for Germany during their match with England on Saturday, his 55th goal out of 99 games played with Germany.
The FA will take two weeks so as to avoid a rash decision regarding Capello's furthered as the manager of England. It's obvious the team needs to be completely reorganized and if Capello stays he will have to take the lead on taking out the old and bringing in the new.
