Capirossi to miss Aragon GP
Despite a successful hand surgery, Suzuki MotoGP racer Loris Capirossi will not participate in the Gran Premio A-Style de Aragón in Spain this weekend. The Italian was injured during a collision with Ducati’s Nicky Hayden at the Misano Grand Prix, the same track where Moto2 racer Shoya Tomizawa tragically died.
Capirossi, a veteran racer, required reconstruction in his right hand of a bone in his little finger and a torn tendon. Capirossi states that the recovery has thus been far successful, but doctors have advised the driver to rest so that his hand can be completely rehabilitated.
Capirossi will rue the loss of points however, as he currently sits in 15th place with 41 points in the championship standings.
“I am extremely disappointed not to be racing at Aragon, but the surgeon has told me to rest the hand for another week,” Capirossi reveals, according to AutoSport.com. “I am still feeling a bit of pain and I'm going to the hospital every day to have the wound cleaned and dressed, so although I could possibly be able to ride I wouldn't be fit enough and it might jeopardise my attendance and competitiveness at Motegi if I did - so it's best to stay at home. I wish [team-mate] Alvaro all the best for the weekend and hope that he gets a good result for us - we certainly need one. I'll be back for the trio of races next month and will be looking to get some good results at circuits where I know we can go well.”
Team-mate Alvaro Bautista is tied with Capirossi in the rankings, and will be the only Suzuki rider this weekend. The team will be counting on him to boost up the points at this crucial time of the season with only six races left, but with one man down, it may be a struggle. Capirossi hopes to return to the MotoGP circuit in time for the Japan GP on 3 October.
