Capital Plan is likely to prevail in the Beverly Hills Handicap
Against five other older fillies and mares, Capital Plan, look to be the one to beat in the Grade 3, $100,000 Beverly Hills Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park’s turf footing over the classic distance of 1 ¼ miles.
Co-owned by trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and Mark DeDomenico, Capital Plan is a 4-year-old filly by Rock Hard Ten, who is yet to win a race over the Hollywood Park’s turf course in three starts altogether, but the distance of the Beverly Hills Handicap is surely the right one.
Bred in Kentucky by Madeleine Pickens and Diamond A Racing, Capital Plan will return to the 1 ¼ mile distance in the Beverly Hill Handicap, as previously she has run over the classic distance back in 21 October, 2011, over the Santa Anita Park’s unique downhill turf course.
Under jockey Rafael Bejarano, Capital Plan was running over the 10 furlong distance for the first time in her career, and thanks to a well organised stalking run from the rider, and cutting Capital Plan loose at the right moment earned her the first victory over the 1 ¼ mile distance.
She downed Thisismystage in second and Malusita in third, while covering the distance in an impressive 1 minute and 59.23 seconds in an allowance/optional claimer.
Generally, Capital Plan is fond of the poly track, and that is where she has run her most races, but it is a general perception that horses who can run well on synthetic surface’s can also do well on grass fields.
However, apart from that 1 ¼ mile allowance/optional claimer, Capital Plan is yet to down a turf race.
Out of Strawberry Road mare Miss Dahlia, Capital Plan is exiting a solid third place finish in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes over the distance of 1 1/8 miles over the Hollywood Park’s turf footings.
Capital Plan’s main rival in the Beverly Hills Handicap will be, Cambina, who shares the top weight of 118 pounds with Capital Plan.
Though, Cambina went on to win the Grade 1 American Oaks last season in a dead heat over a distance of 1 ¼ miles, is yet to post a victory in seven consecutive races.
Capital Plan will break from post number 4 under jockey Joel Rosario, while Cambina from post number 2 under Garrett Gomez for trainer Jeff Bonde.
