Cappie Pondexter, Nicole Powell, Taj McWilliams-Franklin: Top WNBA players from August 3 games
Two games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Thursday, August 4, 2011. In the first game of the night, the New York Liberty dismantled Chicago Sky in the fourth quarter and walked away with a 59-49
victory. Sky held a five-point going into the final quarter, but they could not handle Liberty, who outscored them 16-1 to seal their second consecutive victory. It was second straight defeat for Chicago.
At the Target Center, Minnesota Lynx, on the back of a last second jumper from Taj McWilliams-Franklin, registered their eighth consecutive victory (62-60) over San Antonio Silver Stars. It was San Antonio’s third straight defeat.

New York Liberty vs. Chicago Sky
Cappie Pondexter
Cappie Pondexter gave an exceptional performance at Prudential Center. The shooting guard scored a game-high 15 points, including 10 of them in the first half. Pondexter, a two-time WNBA Champion, also dished out three assists,
grabbed two rebounds and stole the ball twice in more than 35 minutes of action. She shot 6 for 16 from the field on the night.
Nicole Powell
Nicole Powell scored seven of Liberty’s 16 points in the fourth quarter. The 29-year-old pulled out a double-double in the win with a game best 10 rebounds and 13 points. Powell, who was the WNBA’s Most Improved Player for 2005,
went 5 for 16 from the floor and nailed a shot from down town with 5:16 remaining on the clock to give the Liberty their first advantage of the game.
Essence Carson
New York’s guard Essence Carson came off the bench with 11 points, three assists and a block. The 25-year-old player shot 4 for 5 from the field and 3 for 4 from free throw line.
Sylvia Fowles
Sylvia Fowles was the only Chicago Sky player who reached the double figures in scoring. Fowles contributed 11 points and was just two rebounds shy of a double-double. She finished the game with a 5 for 8 shooting from the field.
 Minnesota Lynx vs. San Antonio Silver Stars
Taj McWilliams-Franklin
Taj McWilliams-Franklin hit a game-winning jumper with just one second left to seal the win for her team. She triggered 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out two assists in the victory. The seven-time WNBA All-Star finished
the game on an 8 for 10 shooting from free throw line and 5 for 10 from the floor.
Candice Wiggins
Minnesota’s guard Candice Wiggins came off the bench and scored all of her 15 points from down town.
Sophia Young
Sophia Young recorded a double-double for San Antonio. The player racked up 18 points, shooting 6 for 15 from the field, and pulled down 13 rebounds.
