Capt. Candyman Can back to the races after 6 months to participate in the Mr. Prospector
Joseph Rauch and David Zell’s 5-year-oldhorse Capt. Candyman Can will be winding down his 5-year-old season in the Grade 3, $100,000 Mr. Prospector on 31 December, 2011, over a distance of six furlongs on dirt at Gulfstream Park.
The race has reeled in a good field of seven sprinters, a race that is exclusive for 3-year-old and above males. The race will be run over the main track and the field also includes the grade 2 winner Indiano, and grade 1 placed Apriority.
Ian R. Wilkes trained horse, Capt. Candyman Can, is a grade 1 winner as well, when he scored in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes at about seven furlongs over Saratoga’s dirt course in 2009. He downed the likes of Vineyard Haven in second and Munnings in
third, while covering the seven furlong distance in 1 minute and 22.35 seconds.
The son of Candy Ride, out of mare Storm Way by Storm Creek, Capt Candyman Can hasn’t raced since June 2011, when he came out lame in the Grade 3 Aristides Stakes at about six furlongs on 4 June, 2011, at Churchill Downs to winner Noble’s Promise.
Coming out lame did ring alarm bells, but trainer Ian Wilkes reported afterwards that no physical issues were detected with Capt. Candyman Can, but the time off was an opportunity to sit on the sidelines and take care of the few minor injuries he was carrying.
Missed the whole of 2010, and in 2011 Capt. Candyman Can has raced 4 times, and out of those 4 he has won twice. He kicked off the season with a win in the Super Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs going over seven furlongs on 5 February, 2011.
He managed to defeat Legal Move in second and A Diehl in third, covering the distance in 1 minute and 23.25 seconds.
Moving to Gulfstream Park to run in the Sir Shackleton Handicap for his second start on 3 April, 2011, to run over a distance of six and a half furlongs on dirt. Defeating the likes of Regal Ransom in second and Nathan’s H Q in third.
