Would it be ok to wear a skirt and black pumps to the Captain's dinner on the Royal Carribean?

It said formal/cocktail dress so I wasn't sure.

Are flipflops ok for regular dinners? I know shorts aren't ok.

  1. a skirt is acceptable atire. I wear flip flops to the dinner and no one has ever said anything to me. On our last cruise there was a couple who didnt dress up at all on any night. just jeans and a decent shirt and they were never kicked outta dinner. I think as long as you look nice they don't really care.

  2. First of all the Captain's dinner is somewhat of a misnomer.  I have been on many RC cruises and they do have Formal nights and on some of those formal nights the ship's captain MAY eat in the dining room during one of the two dinner seatings.  BUT, there is usually a table in the middle of the room seating a dozen or so people who eat with the captain.  But the rest of the hundreds of people in the main dining room usually do not even know that the captain is even in the room.  A couple RC cruises ago we were at a table near the captain's table but he had come into the room late and the rest of the room did not even know that he was there.

Now what does happen on most cruises is on the formal nights there may be a captain's reception in the ship's showroom and guests come in according to their dinner seating and are greeted by the captain and staff as they enter, and maybe have a photo taken.  Then everyone has a glass of wine or champaign and that's it.

As for the dress for the formal nights, your cruise will have a formal night or two when you can wear your best stuff and get pictures taken. The formal nights are REQUESTED not required attire. You will not be denied entry to the main dining room if you decide not to dress up, as long as you are at least sports casual. But most people do dress up. A gown or party dress for women and a suit or tux for men. Some people dress up both formal nights, some don't. We always take the formal stuff off after dinner and a photo or two and go back to casual stuff.  The skirt and pumps that you mentioned will be perfectly acceptable if that's what you want to wear.  No one is going to go tell you to go dress up more.  None of the other passengers will likely even notice, unless you wear something outlandish.

The ships request that you dress sports casual after 6:00 PM and that would include your shoes as well.  So flip-flops would generally not be acceptable, unless maybe if they look like regular sandals.  The matre D is responsible for greeting guests in the main dining rooms' doors and they are the ones who will turn away people who are not appropriately dressed.  So its possible for you to wear flip-flops if the matre D does not see your feet/shoes.  But  I suggest wearing shoes each evening that are more appropriate.
