Captain and the coach wanted Mohammad Sami in the T20 squad, says the Chief Selector – Cricket News Update
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World T20 2012 squad, but the captain and the coach preferred Mohammad Sami because of his extra pace.
The national selectors announced the team for the mega event earlier this week through a press release, throwing in a number of surprises, the biggest of which was the absence of the left-arm fast bowler from Matra.
The 22-year-old returned to the national team during the just-finished tour of Sri Lanka, impressing one and all with his ability to bowl with pace and fire consistently. The left-armer picked up 14 scalps in the three matches he played, along with two five-wicket
hauls on batting friendly conditions.
Junaid however, has failed to find a spot in the T20 team, calling for immense criticism from different ranks.
While talking to Pakpassion, the former left-arm spinner expressed that he himself was in favour of the youngster but http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Davenell-Frederick-Whatmore-c52571 wanted Sami in the team due to his speed.
Iqbal revealed that the team management was extremely impressed by Sami’s performance in the second T20 of the Sri Lankan tour at Hambantota, where the speedster picked up three wickets to help the Green Shirts level the series.
The former cricketer said, “My opinion is the same as that of many others in that I preferred Junaid over http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 that
he [Sami] performed quite well and took some important wickets.”
The chief selector is not satisfied with the Karachi-born fast bowler’s performance in the ODIs and the only Test he played in the Island but the captain and the coach were happy with his progress in the shortest version.
“It was the opinion of the captain and coach that we should not look at how he has bowled in other formats, but focus on his performance in the T20s,” he added. “I wasn’t ready to buy this argument but they were persistent.”
