Question:

Capturing Stray Kittens - Any ideas?

There are some stray kittens I have been watching/feeding for about a month. There were 5, but I only see 3 now. I have tried to approach them but they run. I leave food for them, they eat. I tried calling animal rescue to come get them - no luck. I posted an ad on Craig's List to let people know where they are - no luck. Tonight all three ventured on my patio. I left them out food and water. I tried to approach - they ran. Any ideas how to humanely trap these kittens? I have a no kill shelter that will take them, but you have to deliver the kittens to them.

  1. Find animal traps to set.  There are traps you can get that you place a can of food in, and once the animal steps on a bar the trap closes.  It doesn't hurt the animal in any way.  Try going to a Tractor Supply near you or go online.

  2. Ohh thats a hard one, i do know ONE thing you can do, try putting the food in your house where they can see it etc window, door, somthing and then when they coe in shut the window or door real fast.

    PS

sorry to say but i think the other two where eaten by a wolf or something wild

  3. You need to go out and buy a trap originally used for racoons, wild rabbits, skunks, etc. Usually they can be found at Grain and Feed stores or the said stores know where you can locate such cages.

These traps you set food inside and when an animal ventures inside and begins to eat, it springs shut. You can attempt to catch all three in one or just catch them all gradually or set up multiple traps around your yard.

Either way, feral cats can be very, very dangerous and it would be wise that if you do any handling of the cats, take lots of precaution and good luck.

  4. I had the same problem awhile ago.  We used a no kill trap with food inside to attract the kittens.  You do not have to be near it to capture them, their inquisitive nature will capture them.  If you know where the kittens live, another method that works is to take a long string and put it under where they stay, then stay far away and wiggle the string, if they take interest in it, slowly pull the string towards you.  Eventually, the kittens may come close enough to you for you to catch them with a blanket.  Hope this helps!

  5. You should be able to borrow a humane trap. You'll probably have to put down a deposit though.

Have you asked the shelter if they have traps you can borrow?

Or see if a local trap-neuter-return program will let you borrow a trap once you explain the situation.

    Good luck!
