Car Accident!! I was the passenger my friend was Driving my Car?

I was driving with a friend early in the morning and I couldn't drive (drinking) so I handed him the keys which was the best thing to do considering. Now he falls asleep and gets into an accident. I do not blame him however because of course it's my car but at the same time I trusted that he was OK to drive but the whole incident is just an unlucky bad break. The police officer was VERY understand and let us slide with regards to giving either one of us a DUI. In addition, he helped us corroborate a story about how we just got cut off the road which was extremely kind of him to look out for us that way. My question is for insurance premium increase purposes, does it matter who I say was driving the car? I told my insurance that we got cut off but that I was driving, not my friend.

  2. If you have a collision claim on your policy regardless of who was driving, your premiums will go up.

  3. I don't condone lying to the insurance company about anything.

I'm not going to excuse the behavior and I'm not going to tell you how to work the system.

A police officer telling you to lie - is not helpful or kind -- he is a party to your insurance fraud (which happens to be a crime).

  4. i think you will do ok... but chalk that up to experience.. if you were not drinking it would not have happined.. drink at home if you must and never loan anything to anyone

  5. You should have just told the truth.  If the real truth comes out that you were drunk, they won't accept the fact that he was driving - they'll think you are now making excuses.

    Good Luck.

P.S.  It would NOT matter who was driving.  An accident was an accident.
