Car Brakes Question (UK)?

Question

Can anyone tell me how often a car's brakes need "bleeding" and are there any symptoms which suggest they need it.

Also what are brake rotors and would a Ford Focus have them ?

breaks shouldn't need bleading in normal situations, only if things have been taken apart however soemtimes odd things happen and they may need bleading, the symptoms would be a spongy break peddel, maybe pumping the break peddle may make it work better (where as normaly it would work first press)

No! not unless you have changed the brake pads. !!!!! and the rotors are   what helps stops the car . This  is called the disc Brake  ( the Rotors )..the pads are held in place by clips in the brake caliper. This is all right behind the tire in front

you should not need to bleed the brakes unless you change the master cylinder,brake lines. a ford focus should have front rotors because it is a fairly new car. you can check by looking through the holes in the rims or take off hubcaps if it applies and you will see the rotors. if you have 2 pump the brakes when stopping then you might have a leak in break lines or the master cylinder is byn usually see fluid running un. you ca-passing brake fluidder the master if it is by-passing. please get back 2 me im kind of curious since you are in the u.k  good luck mike from canada

The brakes shouldn't need bleeding unless you have had work done on them and even then they may not need bleeding. A symptom that my suggest they need it would be if the pedal felt spongier than  normal or if it feels like you are compressing air before your brakes kick in (not sure about brake rotors or whether they would be fitted to focus sorry). the only time you need to bleed the brakes is, if the master cylinder goes dry, if theres a hose or line breaks or if you change anything like calipers, wheel cylinders or master cylinder. brake rotors are what the brake pas run on, when you hit the brake, a piston in the caliper pushes against the pads and the pads goes against the rotors and stops you. like i said if you do any kind of work on the brakes that require any of those things i mentioned , you need to bleed the brakes, changing brake shoes or pads, you dont have to bleed brakes. if your brakes feel spongy, you might want to bleed them.

Every time you change your pads.

you can feel more play in your brake pedal when they need bleeding, but as its progressive, a lot of people don't notice that their brake pedal has become "spongey".

a rotor is just another term for brake disc
