Car Buying?

Question

Would I get a better price if I went to a place and said I would pay cash right off the bat or let them think I would finance? (salesman's commision and interest earnings, etc.) I have found a car but am not sure what to do, I plan to pay cash but want to have the upper hand in trying to get the best price.

Don't let them know that you have the cash to pay. If you let them know you have the cash then they won't lower the price for you. Why should they since they know you have the cash money. Just ask the salesman to lower the price.  If they don't lower the price talk and waste his/her time as long as you can. If they don't lower the price you can walk away and tell them to call you if they can lower the price. Wait for the phone call, but in the meantime check out other vehicles. Check out what you should pay for the vehcile by checking out Kelly Blue Book online or a similar web site. Tell the salesman you won't pay more that what is stated by Kelly Blue Book.

Honestly it makes very little difference.  It's very easy to get credit nowadays so it's not as though they would give you a great deal.  

The biggest way to save money on buying a vehicle is to negotiate the trade-in (if you're doing a trade-in) separate from the purchase.  Often times they will play games with your trade to make you feel good, when you likely could have saved more on the outright purchase of the vehicle.

Don't be afraid to walk away.  I've walked out of a deal, and got a call from the salesman the next day to come in and visit.  At that point I knew they were desperate and knew I had the upperhand.
