my boyfriend is a car salesman, and he says to get the best payment possible (if this is what your trying to achieve) is to put 25% down.

Actually, 10% is more than $1549.90. You have to factor in sales tax, registration and documentary fees. That averages out to about another 10% nationwide. That brings the total to about $17049 out the door. 10% of that is $1,704.90
