Question:

Car (Jeep) Buying Question?

I am wondering if I should buy a jeep that I recently saw available where I live:

It is a 93' Grand Cherokee with a straight V6, K&N intake, Brush Guard, Dual Flowmaster Exhaust, Power Options, MOTO Speed Rims, Tinted Windows, Remote Start, and Leather... It has also been wired for a stereo system.

The only thing that scares me is that it has 227k miles on it. I spoke with the owner and he assured me that it is all good to go.

Does anyone have any ideas, should I buy it?

  1. The engine is a 4.0 liter straight 6 and has been around since the 70's. It is a very good engine that has been very reliable. I would be concerned with the few high performance parts could indicate a hot-rodder which would prematurely wear any engine. The trans would be something to be concerned about. Figure if a tranny would go you could spend $1500.00 for a good overhaul. Make sure the purchase price is fair enough that if you have to dump 1500 into it your not going to get hurt to bad. Cars with that many miles are hard to sell so offer them 2500 for it.

  2. That seems like an awful lot of money for a relatively old SUV with a TON of miles - forget all the extras and options, this guy has to realize that he's trying to market an SUV that's going to get about 15 miles/gallon in a $4/gallon world.

If you're really interested in this car, I certainly would not pay this much for it. I'm sure the exhaust and rims and brush guard cost him a lot of money, but unless this truck is PRISTINE inside and out, and he has a TON of maintenance records to show that he really babied this vehicle, I just can't see paying that much for a VERY used truck. I'd be scared, too :)

And ditto for the first poster's old Bimmer/Benz comment - especially if you can find a well-maintained diesel, which in an older Mercedes is not too hard to come by.

    Best of luck!

  3. Well you can always take it to a mechanic and get it checked out before buying it and at that mileage most likely alot of parts have already been replaced though I wouldn't spring 3k for it. These days you want to go with fuel efficient.

For the same money, look around for late 80's early 90's 4/6/ cyl Benz' and BMW's and you'll have one cool ride plus save a ton on gas.
