A radar detector detects the radar signal emitted by a police radar gun or photo radar station, alerting you to the speed trap and reminding you to check your speed before you get to the trap. The use of radar detectors is LEGAL in the UK (see sources). Police radar guns use different radar bands (frequencies) in different parts of the world. A radar detector receives the stray radio waves from a speed trap and hopefully warns you to slow down in time. They are Illegal in UK and most other motoring countries. A radar locator has a database of known trap locations and checks this against your position by GPS to give a warning. These are legal (except Switzerland) but of course don't help with mobile traps
