Car/SUV with room for 3 carseats in the backseat?

We are looking for a car or SUV that has room for 3 carseats. We are having twins and have a son, so we will need room for 2 infant carseats along with my son's Britax converter.

My husband is FINALLY trading in his Mustang, and so we will have another car to take family trips in other than my SUV. We are open to another SUV, only it would have to be somewhat fuel efficient, as my husband has a long commute.

A couple of SUVs that we really like are the BMW X5 and Audi Q7, any tips/suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

  1. Hybrid Saturn VUE suv

  2. i have 3 kids in carseats (4 kids total) and i am not aware of any vehicle that has a wide enough interior to comfortably accommodate 3 carseats on the same row.  i looked and couldn't find one, but that was a couple years ago.  and think beyond the infant carriers as your children will be in carseats for years and the carseats that fit toddlers and preschoolers can be wider than infant carriers.  my suggestion, and I myself have an SUV and i never thought i'd like a minivan, is the dodge grand caravan.  we have a 2005 dodge grand caravan sxt.  the center row is two captain chairs and then there's room for three in the back row.  the reason i suggest this one is if you're going to have to climb into a vehicle to fasten or unfasten an older child, a minivan usually has more top to bottom room than an SUV.  and we shopped around for the least expensive minivan with all the features we wanted and the caravan was up to $25,000 less than other comparable minivans.  the least expensive, next to the caravan, was about 5 or 6 thousand more and it was a chrysler (basically the same van but with a different brand name on it).  we bought ours during employee pricing so we got quite a deal.  we've had absolutely no trouble with it thus far and we certainly drive it quite a bit.  we even took it cross country on vacation and everything is great.  it gets comparable gas mileage to other vehicles in it's class, about 20 mpg is our experience.  i don't think mpg gets much better than that in a 3.8L v6, but i haven't shopped for a couple years.  i can tell you that if we had to buy another family vehicle today, we'd buy another caravan.

congratulations on twins, by the way!

  3. Neither the X5 or the Q7 is very fuel efficient, Mercedes offers a diesel in their SUV which is efficient, other than that you could go to a Lexus Hybrid.
