Car Stereo error code?

I have a BMW with a 6 disk cd changer in the trunk. Worked great for a long time. Now when I go to select the CD player the LCD on the stereo shows CD 1-99. I've tried un-pluging the unit from the power cable and connecting it back with no luck. I have been unable to find any real helpful info on the net. I took the car to the dealer and they say to install a different unit as it will cost to much to trouble shoot. I just want to know what is causing the problem and is it worth fixing or to install a new unit.

In most Cases a 99 code means mechanical failure.

You can always go back and see if it is trying to load a disc, spinning and rejecting disc's or if it appears jammed up.

As always make sure your discs are clean and free of debris.

Either way - a 99 code is not a good sign.
