Question:

Car Won't Start Any Ideas?

My car has developed a problem with starting occasionally.

I turn the key into the start position and all you can hear is the fuel pump working.

Battery has been checked and is fine, also replaced terminals on battery.

Alternator working and is charging at 14volts.

Cannot understand because when the car does start on the starter motor it has no problem at all.

The car will only push start when it fails.

No clicking coming from the starter motor. Any one with any ideas would be a great help.

Cheers

  1. starter solenoid locked up possibly next time it does it tap the starter with a hammer if it fires up thats your problem.

  2. Bad starter, bad starter solenoid, ignition switch worn out or loose on the mount, bad or corroded cable at the starter or a bad ground. Many many things can cause this problem.  Start with the simple ones and work from there.

  3. Bad ignition take it to the shop it should be an inexpensive fix

  4. David B beat me to it. The only thing I can add is check the fuse that leads to the ignition circuit. Or check the starter solenoid relay sometimes they get defective and do as you describe. Good luck.
