Car audio, how many watts do i have?

How do people work out how many watts they have.

say for example some guy saying he has a 3000watt stereo,

does he have 1 or more amps each putting out 3000watts or say 3 amps putting out 1000watts each totalling 3000watts.

  1. Most people that brag about what they have are using the peak or max rating not knowing the real power is RMS.

    A 3000 watt system may only be 1200 watts RMS.

    If you say you have a 3000 watt RMS system, you have something.

  2. usually the combined rms output of the amps.

    some competition sanctions use the published rated rms power of the amps.
