my dad is looking into getting a new car. he needs something reliable, fuel efficient, and something that has a nice look to it. nothing too spectacular, but something reliable and 20k or cheaper. He wanted the volkswagon passat because of the good engineering. i told him to look into the nissan altima, for it is cheaper, and i think, better looking. tell me what you think. thanks.

  1. You should have your dad visit www.edmunds.com  it's a great resource when in the market for a new vehicle.  They have all of the spec and even show you pricing that people in your zip code are reporting for their purchase of that particular vehicle.  That way when you go to the dealer you know what kind of deal you're getting.

Another awesome resource is consumer reports.  They actually rate the 4 cylinder Passat as s below average car, but the 6 cylinder as a good one for reliability.  Do your homework upfront that way you won't have as much buyers remorse down the road.

  2. can't go wrong with toyota.

  3. I wouldn't go with volkswagons. I would go with either a Honda Accord, or a Honda Civic if I were you. Great handling, great look, and great MPG. They will never let you down.

  4. There is an abundant amount of cars he can choose from at 20k. My personal choice that would fit in your dad's category is a 2003-2007 Honda Accord. It looks very cool with tinted windows for his own privacy and it is a very economical car.

I wouldn't suggest going to a dealer if he doesn't know what type of car he wants because some sales man can get him into driving the wrong car at the wrong price.* Do not let the salesman know how much he is willing to spend on a car.

His best bet is to do is a little research prior to buying a car. Hope this helps; Good Luck !

  5. First question you (or your dad) gotta ask yourself, have you driven the cars you plan to purchase? If not, go driving all of them BEFORE you make any decision. 20000 is a huge amount for most people, so it is supposed to be spent smartly without any regret. : )

I believe that your dad is looking for a mid-size sedan within 20k. There are several good choices in this class. If he desires a German car, Passat is the one, and probably the only choice he has for a German car.

However, if he is open to japanese cars, there are several options out there, including Nissan altima you mentioned.

Put the looking aside, as it is very subjective, Toyota Camry and Honda Accord are both reliable and followed by Nissan Altima.

Money-wise, Honda Accord could provide you the most features with the least money if you negotiate correctly. Passat would cost more at begining and also after you purchase it.

Space-wise, Accord should take the lead as it has a very huge read seat.

Fun-to-drive: Passat should take the lead as one of my friends he has a previous generation of Passat and he loves it so much.

Either one above is a good choice, and each one has its strength and weakness. Again, make sure you test drive all cars BEFORE making any decision. And no matter what car you purchased, we would like to have you reported the price to us if it is conveneint for you.
