Question:

Car clunking, grinding, and now slightly pulling? CV joint? Wheel bearing? Help please!?

I have a 2000 Dodge Neon that is occasionally making a loud clunk sound and grinding sound- usually will clunk when backing out of a parking spot and have a grinding sound randomly when driving. Sometimes when hitting a bump it will start to grind, but hitting a bump while it is grinding will usually stop the sound. The sound is coming from the rear passenger tire area. Just yesterday the back end of the car started a little jerking pulling seemingly from the back affected area- there was no jerking in the steering wheel. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Also what would the cost of such a repair normally cost and how serious of a concern is it as money is tight and payday is a week away...

  1. sound like you need to jack the right rear tire up off the ground and turn it to see if there is any noise and check if the wheel is loose. If its  a wheel bearing you need to fix it before you drive the car any more or your wheel will come off.

  2. well you should check if the drive shaft is damaged frist get in your drive way turn the tire so that you can touch the cv boot and check it for any probelm but its probably the drive shaft

  3. probably a rear wheel bearing going out cost varies depending on if you do it or a shop and what else has gone bad but the more you drive the more you will break

  4. gear box and brake padd's

  5. I would pull of the wheel and inspect the area you think the sound is comin from.  In the rear of a neon you dont have a cv joint.  so it would probably be a bearing .  it could be many things but i would chheck the bearing first.

  6. dude, same thing happened with my sable. rear right caliper is seized up and the brakes are always on. It has to do with ure e brake as well. the grinding is ure brake pads being completely gone.

  7. well driving it does cost more money so best you stop driving and get answer to how much to repair you drop a axle or lose a wheel its going to be much higher.. most likely its a cv joint which is axle and bearing...... your car has a bad cv joint easy to fix some what at hom eif you know your way with tools and high if you dont.. only thing you can do is call three places and ask how much to fix it and or any shop should be able to tell you what it is...
