I was driving my car and all of the suddent it shut off with no hesitation or nothing. It cranks but it doesnt start no puffs or shutters just cranking. I check fuses and plug wires nothing. I sprayed starter fluid into the throttle body and it puffed hesitated and a bunch of black smoke came out of my tail pipe. What do you think it is? the car has 157,000 miles. Its a camaro z28 94. Stock. Thanks!

  1. gas or lack of it

  2. fuel pump

remove gas line click on /off see if shoots gas don't crank

2 person job use a jar

  3. It can be a broken timing belt, fuel pump not pumping

  4. Check the flux capacitor.

  5. check the time and is 157,000 miles old  not the o2 sensor is not the problem

  6. It is unlikely to be related to fuel - generally fuel-related problems would not fail suddenly, that is, there'd be some erratic running for a second or two before it dies.

Ignition is the more likely cause, or as someone suggested cam timing.   If it's the latter, the sound of cranking would be very strange (not the usual rythmic rah-rah-rah sound), as valves are not opening when they're supposed to, and some may be open all the time.

  7. my oldsmobile did that and it was the module went out. it still would run with a bad 02 sensor. when you pushed the little valve, was the ignition on at the time? it,s suppose to be. i would check for spark first, it just might be the module.

  8. check your fuel pump, turn the key on, don't crank it, just listen for it (whining sound from gas tank)...... if you don't hear it, that's your problem, check the fuel pump fuse and relay (swap the relay from the AC clutch or horn to the fuel pump relay socket and try it), if that doesn't work you may need a pump....... you can have someone go under the car and hit the tank with a rubber hammer while your cranking it that will often get it going, but not a permanent fix

if it's not the pump, check for spark...... one way to do that is take a spark plug out, put the wire back on and lay the plug on a metal part of the engine, have someone crank the car and see if theres spark...... if no spark, check your coil, distributor cap and rotor (assuming you have the optispark distributor rather than electronic)

actually it's definitely related to not getting fuel since it started to run on starting fluid........ check the pump!
