i recently bought a 2000 honda prelude with an aftermarket exhaust system and it is a little too loud for my liking. How could i make it not so loud? a new muffler, or i was reading about silencers? i would still like it to sound deep but just not as loud and obnoxious..

any suggestions are appreciated.

  1. a silencer would be a cheaper option, you probably have a deeper tone too, but you can pick up a good sounding muffler for around $40-50. unless its a solid cat-back exhaust system (one piece) where replacing it would be costley, i would say spend the $10 for a silencer.

  2. New muffler

  3. I had a similar problem with my first car, a 2000 Honda Civic.  I put an eBay exhaust on with test pipe.  First of all, I'd check if it does have a test pipe on it.  If it does, swap it out for a catalytic converter or high-flow cat (they're a lot more quiet, plus they'll actually pass emissions).  And I agree that a silencer would be a great idea for a softer sound.  Most aftermarket exhaust companies sell silencers for around $25-$50.  Hope this helps, good luck.

  4. a silencer will help but you will need to figure out which exhaust brand you have to get the correct silencer. A quieter exhaust would most likely be the solution though. if you take a look here http://www.street-power.com/prexhepe.htm... you will be needing one of the systems that has the larger canister such as the tanabe medallion touring or the greddy SP2. The N1 canisters "full round" are much louder than the oval muffler systems. hope this helps.

  5. A different muffler is your only real option, the muffler is on the very rear of the car so you can not put a silencer on after it.  You'll have to simply change out the muffler for a different one, fortunately there are only 2 bolts and 2 rubber hangars holding it on so it will not be a difficult procedure.

    Good luck!

  6. Well when you say exhaust system, does it include headers and a cat-back exhaust or just a muffler? Also is there a catalytic converter, test pipe or nothing at all attached after the down pipe? IF you have aftermarket headers, different brands are louder than others like DC Sports are really loud on my friends prelude. If it's just the muffler get something close to stock with a 2.25" or 2.5" outlet instead of a f**t cannon. Also high flow cats or an OEM cat will keep you legal and quieter.

  7. It don't seem like anybody on here knows what their talking about as usual.... Try putting your Catalytic Converter back on which a previous owner probably took off and made straight pipe exhaust for that extra loud raspy noise kids like. go to a muffler shop around your area and ask them if they sell cats and probably be 30 to put it on and 90 for it. no matter what muffler you put on man its gonna be loud and raspy because nothing slowing down the exhaust flow to the muffler. Good luck Man!
