Question:

Car for commuting: Polo or Yaris?

Hi guys. I need to buy a car for commuting 120+ (return) miles a day so it must be economical and reliable. I cannot afford a new car I'm afraid so I'm limited to 4k. What do you make of a Toyota Yaris or a VW Polo? Both with a diesel engine of course. Any other recommendation will be much appreciated.

Cheers

Edgar

  1. Polo

or better yet a Honda Fit (Jazz)

the yaris is poor on everything but mpg & reliability

Although the starting price is enticingly low, a well-equipped Yaris sedan can easily top $15,000. Ultimately the Yaris scored too low to be recommended.

  2. Just looking at Which Car? magazine that turned up last week - The Polo scores above the Yaris for reliability, which is odd as VW as a brand are rated 'poor' for reliability at 75%, Toyota come overall second at 84%, only one point behind Toyota.

In the supermini class, the top four overall are Honda Jazz, Skoda Fabia, Hyundai Getz & Citroen C1 - perhaps one of these would be worth a look.

In the  best buy category, Honda Jazz, Renault Clio & Skoda Fabia come top.

The Honda is only available in petrol, but is beautifully made & fantastically economical averaging 51mpg (although a Skoda Fabia 1.4TDi returns 61mpg average - you'll need to think about it, as diesels much dearer than petrol)

    Hope this helps.

  3. Polo is better.

  4. Polo would be fantastic - I used to have one and they are very good cars...

  5. Ah.

Now there isn,y really an easy answer for this. But for starters i would have to ask what sort of mileage you would be doing whilst commuting.

I will assume that you are a normal commuter with average distance.

I think that the toyota yaris is actually an incredibly good car for that sort of job as its MPG surpasses the polo completely, but the car is relatively small and is not good for carrying a large amount of items.

But his is where the polo will have a greater advantage than the yaris as it has a better capacity for items.

So for commuting i would recommend you buying a polo as it has better potential for the type of job that you require.

I really think this car will match your criterea.

    Hope this helps you

  6. yaris.

  7. for reliability I would go for the yaris - japanese built cars are much more reliable and well built.  VW parts are more expensive to replace.
