  1. With all the major car rental companies you will only need the following:

Driving Licence (held for more than 1 year), Both the Photo ID section and the paper component

Valid Credit Card (With approx 300 - 500 Euros credit available on it. They won't take this money but will do a pre-authorisation in case you damage the car).  Debit card or cash is not usually acceptible

  2. Passport, driver's license and credit card.  Also, calm nerves.  The streets can be very narrow and many drivers tailgate.

  3. If you are going to drive around Europe for more than a month, than the french government has a special leasing program that is actually cheaper than renting a car.

Here are some tips on car rental. They have very tiny cars for rent, and automatics are far and few between. The first car my daughter and I rented we could not get our stuff in and us too. So we were lucky and upgraded to a bigger car on the spot. The next visit we rented through the lease program a diesel van which was great, as there were three of us, all our stuff and art supplies. (It was not great in underground parking garages)

One tip I learned from the locals. Use your car but when you get into a big city like Paris or Madrid, find a parking garage and take a taxi. Also you need to have coins for the toll roads so get some cash at the airport if you have to go very far.

Stay to the right on the interstates as they drive really fast.

Some of the best restaurants are off these main freeways as rest stops.

I rented all are cars on line before we left the States.

They asked to see my drivers licence and passport and credit card, but I paid for the car in advance.

  4. would you believe that i hired a car in Austria and i did not even have my license with me........they run a check on your credit card and  must match your name through to Swansea .........so if you have a driving licence with you and take their insurance cover  i can,t see any problems....you may need to contact your insurance and pay a fee for your licence to be continental licence for the time your there..i had to or else you are covered only for third party.....this agreement covers all European licences
