Question:

Car insurance going up?

We were involved in a hit and run accident. Obviously not our fault, but the people that did it drove off. They've yet to be found. Our car was totaled and we're currently waiting on a payment from the insurance company. My question is, will our monthly car insurance payment go up, even though the accident wasn't our fault? Also, if they find the people that did it (there's more to the story and we're waiting on fingerprints from the car) is it possible to get their insurance to pay the extra amount if ours DOES go up?

  1. For car insurance the most efficient way to get a good rate is do a rate comparison on auto policies. Make certain that you compare similar options with the same limits, car model, location, etc so that all options are a good comparison.

What I always recommend is an internet comparison quote at http://www.InsureAutoNow.info since they have lots of insurers and can give several prices on car insurance polices.

  2. The question is whether your insurance will go up because of a claim.  Since it was a hit and run driver it very clear cut answer you must ask yourself.

Did the insurance company file the claim under uninsured motorist coverage?  Or was it filed under your collision deductible?

If the claim was filed under your uninsured motorist coverage there shouldn't be a surcharge for the accident.  If your insurance does go up it's because of normal rate increase.

However, if the claim was filed under your collision deductible the accident will count against you.  Basically, your filing a claim on your insurance company.  If the damages are typically above $1500.00 you will recieve a surcharge on your auto insurance at your next annual renewal.

Finally, it all depends on how the claim was filed in reference to the coverages on your policy

maybe it can help you get the answers...

    try it...;)

  4. No, it shouldn't.

But if those people are found, your insurance will try really hard to get their money back from those other people, who are most likely uninsured.

You can't get "extra premium" from someone else, in any court I've ever heard of.  Sorry.

  5. Yes, your car insurance will probably increase because you have a claim for a totaled vehicle even if it's not your fault.  It should not go up drastically if you have a good driving record and don't have any previous claims. Some insurance companies are more lenient with accidents that are not your fault.  If the people who hit your car are found, then you will be able to collect money from their insurance if they have it.

My car got stolen a couple years ago and the insurance company had to pay me for the value of the vehicle ($12000). After that claim, my insurance only went up about $15 a month because I have a perfect driving record.

  6. If you find the cuplrits and if they have insurance, your carrier will collect the money back from that company.

If the culprits do not have insurance, your carrier will TRY to collect the money back from that person directly.

Check with your agent regarding your rates increasing. Generally speaking, your rates would not increase for a not at fault accident.

And to further answer your question, the at fault party would not be responsible for your increased rates(if there were any) only the damage they caused to your vehicle.
