Car insurance questions!!!?

Hello,

Just looking for a bit of advice really...

In November 07 I had an accident in my car and a claim was made through the insurance. A month later, while the claim was still going on, I sold the car. I rung my insurance company and asked to cancel my insurance as i no longer owned the car. They told me that becasue the claim was still going through I could not cancel my policy and would have to keep paying monthly until the claim was completed. 8 months down the line the claim is still not finalised and I am well over £400 out of pocket paying for insurance on a car i do not own...is this ok for them to do this or does anyone know if i could claim the money back?

Any advice would be great! thanks

  1. Sometimes when you pay for insurance in instalments, if you read the small print you are actually getting a loan to pay your insurance in one go.

If this is the case then you would have to keep the payments up, otherwise I don't know.

  2. Sorry, but you are in the wrong. You should not have sold the car with a pending insurance claim. Your insurers can still charge you, and you may have sold a car that will be subsequently written off, or claimed by your insurer.

Read the small print, once you're in a pending claim, the car is effectively the property of your insurance company until they either return it's ownership to you, or write it off & pay out for it.

  5. Your insurance company is wrong.  How can you keep insurance on a car you don't even own?  You were insured at the time of the accident, and that is all that matters.  Cancel, and if they again tell you that you can't do that, report them to the insurance commissioner for your state.
