Question:

Car insurance ripoff - you tell me... $5.00 fee for adding a car to my policy...?

I ALWAYS pay my policy in full to avoid additional installment fees ($5.00 per month). With that said, I added a third car to my policy one month ago and planned on selling and then removing the second car. I just got the bill for adding the third car and they have INCLUDED a $5.00 INSTALLMENT fee. I called them up (AIG) and told them that I do not pay in installments and they are charging me $5.00 for adding a vehicle to my policy. She told me that I generated a new bill and any time a new bill must be generated they will charge me $5.00 and I am therefore paying in installments since I didn't pay for all of my cars at my renewal (two weeks before the change) - EVEN THOUGH I DIDN'T OWN THAT CAR AT MY RENEWAL! What do you think about this? ALSO - get this - my second car sold so, since this bill was printed I have now told them to remove the second car because it has sold. I am certain that that will generate a NEW BILL and they will charge me $5.00 again - what do you think?

  1. I think you spent five dollars in time typing this message.  If you can afford three cars you should be able to afford a 5.00 fee to add a vehicle.  Most every company charges policy fees.  Believe it or not there is a cost involved in assembling a 20 page policy and insurance cards.  Look at every other bill you have.  they include fees.  Cable...phone...etc.  Your bank charges you 2.00 every time you use another banks atm.  I dont understand why everyone is so vicious when it comes to insurance.

  2. call your agent and get them to waive it.  if you went through AIG direct you may have a hard time doing this.  Its always smart to have an agent! :)

  3. Talk to your agent, and ask them to waive that installment fee.

It shouldn't be a problem - I got installment fees waived in situations like these ALL THE TIME.

  4. There is a very easy way to avoid this fee.  Tell your compnay that you will cancel the policy and go to another company if they don't take the fee off your account.  If they still don't take it off, go to another company.

  5. My company doesn't charge $5.00 fees.... Find a new carrier

  6. I think you're making too much of it.

  7. Its just $5.00...pay the bill

  8. $5 is not too much. but I do see your point! unfortunately there is not much you can do,  try to make them take that fee off, if they don't all you can do is don't renew your policy. get insurance through some other company!!
