  1. I recently moved (8 hours away!) and had to take my piggy with me. Since we rode in the cab of the moving truck which towed the car, I didn't have room for her entire cage. Instead, he sat in my lap most of the time, which he loves, but I also had a big shoebox with a towel in it in case he needed to use the bathroom. It wasn't too hard on my guinea pig, we had to take lots of breaks to buy gas anyway.

If you can fit the cage, definitely hold it in your lap or on the seat next to you so your poor guinea doesn't get jostled around! Make sure you take food and treats... That's probably obvious.

  2. A travel carrier would be more comfy then a cage.  You just want to bring what you do daily with your guinea pigs: bring cardboard, food, mineral water, toys.  Not much to bring, really!

    Happy traveling:)

  3. You should have someone hold the travel cage, so that it's not bumping around, and falling over. You will need a lot of vegetables to keep your guinea pig nourished during this uncomfortable car ride.

I would recommend that you also bring some toys along, in case your guinea pig gets bored. The main thing is to keep the travel cage still, and to make sure nothing falls over, as this can be extremely distressful for a guinea pig.

It's wonderful that you are bringing their house cage, to make them feel more comfortable. Also, make sure that the temperature in the car is not too cold, and not too hot, just right for the guinea pig, and to  make sure that no breeze is coming right into their cage. (A draft can be the cause for an upper respiratory infection)

Good luck, and e-mail me if you have any additional questions.

  4. Guinea pigs are not good travelers, but there are steps you can take to make the trip less stressful.

Have fresh wet veggies to feed them during the trip so they stay nourished & hydrated. There should be hay in there too for them to munch on.

Make sure the car has air conditioning and stays cool, but don't put the cage directly in front of a vent.

Make sure the cage is not in direct sunlight from a window.

See that the cage has a hidey house for them to rest in so they feel more secure.

Try to minimize bumpy movements in the car. Hold the cage still if possible.

    Good luck!
