Car not starting but I do not believe its the battery... makes low hum in the rear of car?

When i try to get my car to turn over it makes a low 3 second long hum near the rear of the car. I don't believe its the battery (still possible) because all the lights come on, the car beeps, the radio works fine, and nothing is dimming.

What could the rear noise be? The sound is almost similar to the sound my car makes when I lock it through the power locks.

Its a 1999 Mercury Mystique.

I can't find anyone around me to jump it to see if that may get it started. Any ideas???

  1.   The noise is the fuel pump, Get you a boost,of charge the battery.

I know you know better, make sure it's in park or the clutch pedal is depressed!

                                  "BRILLIANT"!!!!

  2. As the others have said, the noise is your fuel pump. Does the engine turn over normally? If you can hear the fuel pump running, I would make sure that the car has gas in the tank before anything else. The gas gauge and low fuel warning lights are not always accurate.

  3. The hum you're hearing is the electric fuel pump.  Once it pressurizes the system, it cuts off.

I'd bet your solenoid or starter is faulty or you have a bad connection.

The days are over that you could short across the solenoid to the starter, access to the starter is probably impossible on your car.

About all you can do is make sure your battery terminals are clean and contacting and somehow get your car to a battery shop to have the battery checked to see if that's the problem.

Sometimes a battery post will break down below the surface of the battery case.  All the lights and accessories will still work, but there's not enough current to crank the starter.

But since you didn't say you're getting a clicking sound, there's no guaranteel that's your problem.

  4. Is the car trying to crank at all when you go to try to start it? Or do you get nothing? Do you hear the starter trying to engage at all, like a clinking noise? What do you hear when actually try to start it? The humming sound is the fuel pump and if it makes that humming sound that means it's working. So there is nothing wrong with your fuel pump.

It could be a few things, going in order from the best possibilities:

Make sure if it's AT it's not in neutral.

Your battery although lights work and all it could be really low on power, so when you get it started have it checked.

Your starter might just be completely dead(because you don't even hear the clicking noise)

    Alternator might be dead also

  5. The noise is a mystery, but the battery connections may be slightly corroded or loose. It's enough electricity to run radio, lights, etc. But not enough to start the car...

  6. thats your fuel pump running, you will need to make sure you are getting fuel
