  1. If you are sure there are no leaks then open the water reservior tank (when engine is cold of course) and see if the water inside has any kind of rainbow effect or shine on it (like when petrol on the pavement gets wet).

The only place the oil could go if not leaking is into the cooling system which means the head gasket could be going.  Tell tale signs are white smoke.  I'd take it to a garage!

  2. most of the answers could be right. first take it to a garage and get them to give a good check over and it might help to try an addictive called ENGINE OIL STOP LEAK. Maybe that may help

  3. is it new? it could be the engine just breaking in. Alot of engines do that for some reason.

  4. It sounds like there may be a ring stuck in the engine or you could have a bad head gasket and it is leaking into the oil. If you are using a Pennsylvania or paraffin based oil like Pennzoil or Quaker State, change the oil and put in the correct weight oil in either Valvoline, or Castrol and see if that helps.

  5. As big Steve says ,it could be just bedding in if it,s new,and especially if it,s a diesel,if you stay under 60mph and don,t rev the engine it should use none Watch your exhaust for excessive blue smoke. You can always visit a mechanic or garage for advice, but make sure they are honest and recommended.

  6. Water leakage!...your oil is trying to compensate for the extra heat caused by the friction of an improperly functioning water cooling system. A properly functioning one normally takes adequate care of this.

Also if your engine is over 200k's OR simply  has worn rings yet a good burn you wont see the smoke.

So!   Rings or Water or Both.   Go checkit out pronto!

  7. Check your oil and look for signs of water in it. You may have a blown head gasket. The oil will end up in the water or exhaust. A compression test may help.

  8. Well, other than through super-natural processes heretofore unknown to me, missing oil can only leave the scene in two ways: it leaks externally or it leaks internally. Internally usually means into the combustion chamber and where it is burned. Oil leaking externally can leak only while you are underway and leave relatively little evidence when you park. In spite of your denials, if it is missing, it leaked out (or in) or was removed.

If you do not park on a hard surface where it is easy to be sure there are no tell-tale drips, place a large piece of cardboard or similar material under the engine area to catch whatever might drip. Also, have a shop put the car on a lift and look for similar evidence underneath.

This just a hunch, but I doubt that a liter of oil every 1000 miles (how many kilometers is that?) is leaking into your cooling system without your noticing.

  9. Sorry, this sounds expensive.  When the engine is COLD take off the radiator cap and see if there is oil in the water...If so you have a leaking cylinder gasket. (About £150.00 to fix) If not the oil must be going somewhere.  I suggest the engine is not worth saving...sorry.

  10. this is hwy driving on a 4cly?...they will burn oil if u run it at high speeds....white smoke will b present when ur car is high feul and oil..

  11. If everything else is okay, it's just one of those things. Some engines do that. The manufacturers in general aren't worried unless it goes substantially above 1 litre per 1,000 miles.  It SHOULDN'T  drink that much, but that's what they say.

There are some Audi engines that notoriously drink much more and Audi say that's normal . . .
