  1. Sounds like a broken serpentine belt.  The serpentine belt usually drives the water pump, power steering pump, alternator, and air conditioning compressor.

    If this belt breaks the water pump quits working and the engine will quickly overheat.  The steam was most likely coming out the overflow vent.

    This belt also drives the power steering pump.  If you belt breaks you lose the power assist on the steering and the steering will get very difficult.

    If it is the serpentine belt, replacing the belt should resolve your problems.
