Question:

Car overheating?

When i was driving my car started overheating. I checked the coolant, it's all good, and the fans are working like crazy. I noticed my oil was almost gone. Could that be the reason why it overheated? And if not, then what could be the reason?

It's a 98' Nissan Altima

  1. That could definitely be the problem.  Oil is both used for lubricating and cooling an engine.  Hopefully you didn't do any permanent damage to the engine driving with a low oil level.

  2. There can be manny reasons, clogged radiator that needs to be cleaned, bad thermostat, internal hose colapse, slipping fan belt, rarely internal transmission slippage, water pump failure,

etc.   Your low oil might indicate a worn engine that overheats internally.

  3. I agree with the low oil causing the overheating.  The engine oil helps to dissipate some of the heat, along with lubricating.

  4. could be oil and a stuck thermostat.  see if both upper and lower radiator hoses are hot after the car is warmed up. if one is hot and one is cold then the thermostat is stuck.  oh also if the air coming off the radiator through the fans should be hot, thats another easier way to check of the thermostat is stuck.  if its cold then that the problem.  low oil is bad though that can damage the eng not just the head gasket.

  5. sound's to me like it could be the head gasket , do you notice any coolant on your dip stick ?

  6. dont no

  7. To little or no oil causes excess friction in the motor causing the coolant in the motor to overheat. top off the oil and try it. could also be a faulty thermostat.

  8. yes its your oil. the level is low thus causing much fritcion and its overheating. oil leak is the main reason. you should top up your oil immediately and check for leaks or stop driving and get it towed to the nearest mech shop to fix that!! or else much damage will happen!
