Car pool essentials?

My friend lives in waterloo and studies in Wilfred Laurier, Waterloo, Canada, ON. His local bus system is going on strike. In that event some students have car pool in mind as an alternative.

What would be some of the advantages/drawbacks of the car pooling for some hunderds of university students. Is there any cost approximations he can make ?

Is there any other solutions you guys have in mind to help these students commute to and fro the university?

It has to be shown that the advantages of the solution provided completely outweigh the costs/cons...

Most schools have a carpool matching system where you post your location and hours, and they match you up with someone.  Yes, it is very cost-effective.
