Can a 2000 Cadillac Seville beat a "muscle car " such as a Camaro, Mustang, or Trans AM?

A friend of mine has a Cadillac Seville and he claims it can outrun the cars i mentioned above, and it just doesnt seem likely to me. Of course im assuming he means with neither his car or any of the others having any aftermarket parts added, but still I just couldnt see his "old folks/family" car being able to keep up with a Camaro or Mustang or Trans Am in a street race. Is he just full of bs about how fast his caddy is or am i underestimating his car. And if Cadillacs are faster, then why arent they ever in street races and why would a "family car" need so much hp and speed anyway?

  1. the caddy has the same v8 as that camaro and trans am so it is deffinately possible.. there is also the possibility that it is supercharged in which case it would stomp on any of those cars.. it is also more aerodynamic cadillacs are actually really fast cars... i would definately say it is a possibility that the cadillac could keep up in a street race with those cars...

  2. I highly doubt a 2000 Seville could beat a Camaro or Trans Am of the same year. From the factory the Seville has 300 hp and 295 ft-lbs of torque. The Camaro and Trans Am have 305 hp and 330 ft-lbs of torque.

Now they are pretty close in power but here is the difference. The Seville is HEAVY, real heavy and big. The Camaro and Trans Am are a lot lighter. Plus when racing from a dig (stand still) the 35 ft-lb difference in torque will really make a difference. You're looking at over a second difference in 0-60 times to start with 5.3 for Camaro and Trans Am and 6.9 for the Seville. Mustangs tend to be slower than Camaros and Trans Ams but still a bit faster than the Seville.

Now if the Seville is racing the V6 versions it would be closer, in this case the Seville would probably edge out the competition. The closest race would be the Seville against the V6 Mustang.

But if he were to race any of these cars and they were stick and the driver did not know how to drive stick well, the Caddy could very well win then.

9 out of 10 times the Cadillac will lose.

  3. Honestly, why bother asking here? You can look this info up for yourself at one of the online version of the car rags (Car and Driver, Road and Track, etc.)

That said, some Caddies have a pretty hot version of the 32-valve Northstar motor in them so your friend isn't necessarily too far off. GM has been trying to reposition Cadillac as a performance brand for quite some time now.

However that Seville will be a much heavier car than those "pony" cars so ... like I said, look it up.

  4. When are you Americans going to learn, it's not the size of the engine it's how you use it. a VW Golf GTI will knock the socks off any of your 6 litre muscle cars thanks to it's fab engineering and gearbox. Get a BMW M3 and it will outdo your freinds and everyone elses car!

  5. THIS WOULD BE FACT AND NOT FICTION. I HAVE OWNED MANY CADILLACS WITH THE NORTHSTAR AND THEY ARE QUICK !!!  SURPRISINGLY FAST FOR A RELATIVELY HEAVY CAR. THE "ETC" MODEL CLAIMS 300 H/P WHEN IN FACT, MINE TESTED AT 340 ON THE DYNO !   STOCK !!  AFTER THE FLOWMASTERS ,COLD AIR INTAKE --CUSTOM MADE TO FIT THE CADDY-- AND SOME SNEAKY COMPUTER WORK, I HIT THE DYNO AGAIN AND WENT UP TO 380 H/P.  THIS WAS A FULL SIZED ELDORADO TOURING COUPE.  BIG SHOCKER TO MOST CARS ! MINE WOULD "BLISTER " THE TIRES FROM A STAND-STILL AND CONTINUE TO ROAST THEM THRU SECOND GEAR ! THESE CARS ARE NO JOKE ! THEY ARE QUICKER THAN THEY APPEAR.. THE DIFFERENCE IN THE " STS-ETC AND SLS MODELS" IS THE COMPUTER SETTINGS AND SOME SUSPENSION. ALL THE NORTHSTARS WILL MAKE 300 H/P WITH NO EFFORT AT ALL. THEY ARE SEVERLY UNDER RATED FOR SMOG AND EPA REASONS...

  6. Definatley possible, Camaros, Mustangs and T/A's all come with an available v6, and the Northstar V8 kicks a**. Have you seen the Cadillac commercials latley, i believe just about their entire lineup is 0-60 in under 6.

  7. It really depends on what kind of Mustang or Camaro you are talking about.  A stock '00 Seville should run with a stock LT-1 Camaro or 87-98 Mustang GT, but don't expect it to beat any 99 and newer V8 Mustangs or LS1 Camaros.

But yes, the Cadillac Northstar motor is a real powerhouse and can propel full size luxury sedans to 155mph.

  8. It's all a matter of horsepower and effectively getting it planted to the ground.  That's what drag racing is all about.  You have to have W amount of horsepower to accelerate a car weighing X pounds to speed Y in Z seconds.  After that you have to get the power to the ground with tires and gearing.  Any car can out accelerate any other car with enough horsepower and a drive-train that can get it to the ground.

When it comes to street racing DON'T!  The wife of my friend was killed when a street racer plowed into her car.  She was just returning home after an event, turned a corner and a street racer took off the front of her car. The driver was killed his passenger was cut in half.  The sad part is Sandy probably would have survived if she had gotten immediate help.  After the impact everybody jumped in their cars and took off without even checking on their friend or his passenger.  It was over 20 minutes after the accident before a passerby called for help.

Street racing is dangerous for everybody not just the people involved.
