Car recommendations wanted - good fuel economy but not too tiny?

My 1997 Toyota Tercel seems to be on its way to the junkyard. It's got over 100K miles and the same thing it did two months it's doing now and I really don't want to put any more money into it.

As I haven't gone car shopping in over ten years I'm clueless to what would be the best car for me new or used. Here's what I want:

- fuel economy - definitely don't want an SUV or truck

- space - I have three show cats and it's been challenging fitting crates and luggage in the car for me and my friend for out of town shows

- look - I'm not against a wagon-style car but most definitely will not drive a minivan LOL

- prefer automatic as I live in the Seattle area with lots of hills.

- 4WD would be a nice option. I like to go up into the mountains to hiking trails or to the passes in the snow.

- price - under $20K

A friend has a Subaru Outback and loves it. so thinking that might be an option or something similar. Also obviously have great faith in Toyotas.

  1. Don't get me wrong - if you've got plenty of money then it's fine to get a new one.  It's just most folks who post on here are head over heels in debt.  My first advice would be 100k miles is nothing these days.  Get somebody on it that knows how to fix things for real.  There are loads of people who would love to have the car you're driving.  Listen to yourself saying "I really don't want to put any more money into it. I'd rather spend $20k"

But, if you have the money, I'd say this: If you want fuel economy and space, and 4wd, then a Subaru would make sense.  I don't think you can get one that cheap.  I think among Hatchbacks, the Mazda 3 is pretty popular, and it's pretty reasonably priced.  German hatchbacks are expensive.  Toyota makes one called the Matrix.  Have you looked at that?

  2. I was going to suggest a Subaru wagon to you. I think it will fit the bill best off for your needs.

As Im in Australia, Im not familiar with the markets in USA. I know in Aus, Toyota dont offer a 4WD wagon.

I have seen a few Nissan import wagons that are 4WD, I belive they are Skylines, but they are aimed more for the performance market, and probably not your thing.

Perhaps have a look a Hyundai? Their quality and warranties have improved massively since they were first introduced, and if 4WD is only a consideration, you might like the Elantra wagon, or, perhaps even the Tuscon (if they exist in the states)

Best of luck, were looking at upgrading now, and have similar factors to consider, as we have 2 Beagles and we're planning a family.

  3. Mazda3 sedan or hatchback would be my top choice.

Good fuel economy, enough space in the hatchback for 3 cats, comes in a 5-speed for the downhill descents, prices range from $14k-$22k.
